Selection-Free Predictions in Global Games with Endogenous Information and Multiple Equilibria∗ George-Marios Angeletos MIT and NBER
نویسنده
چکیده
Global games with endogenous information often exhibit multiple equilibria. In this paper we show how one can nevertheless identify useful predictions that are robust across all equilibria and that could not have been delivered in the common-knowledge counterparts of these games. Our analysis is conducted within a flexible family of games of regime change, which have been used to model, inter alia, speculative currency attacks, debt crises, and political change. The endogeneity of information originates in the signaling role of policy choices. A novel procedure of iterated elimination of non-equilibrium strategies is used to deliver probabilistic predictions that an outside observer—an econometrician—can form under arbitrary equilibrium selections. The sharpness of these predictions improves as the noise gets smaller, but disappears in the complete-information version of the model. JEL Classification Numbers: C7, D8, E5, E6, F3.

How do economic fundamentals, policy preferences, and market information shape optimal policy and devaluation outcomes during speculative currency crises? We address these questions in a global-game model where speculators lack common knowledge regarding the policy maker’s commitment to defending the currency. While previous work has shown that the signaling role of preemptive policy measures s...

This paper studies defense policies in a global-game model of speculative currency attacks. Although the signaling role of policy interventions sustains multiple equilibria, a number of novel predictions emerge which are robust across all equilibria. (i) The central bank intervenes by raising domestic interest rates, or otherwise raising the cost of speculation, only when the value it assigns t...

Global games of regime change — that is, coordination games of incomplete information in which a “status quo” is abandoned once a sufficiently large fraction of agents attacks it — have been used to study crises phenomena such bank runs, currency attacks, debt crises, and political change. We extend the static benchmark examined in the literature by allowing agents to accumulate information ove...

We extend the static benchmark examined in the literature by allowing agents to take actions in many periods and to le...
